10th Annual 'Student Led' UC Davis One Health Symposium

Tuesday 31 October 2023

The theme of the UC Davis 10th Annual One Health symposium was "Together, Student Leaders Face the Climate Crisis" – hosted as a 3-hour virtual satellite session for CUGH's Global Health Week to engage people around the world. The event had a Global Case Competition featuring student proposals for a One Health solution that addresses a climate crisis event in their community followed by a Calvin Schwabe Lectureship from Dr. Jakob Zinsstag from the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute on One Health social-ecological frameworks. The lecture then led into a riveting Panel Discussion with Dr. Hamamoto a veterinarian with UC Davis CVET, Dr. Castillo an Environmental/Agricultural Economist from UC Berkeley, and Dr. Domènech-Jardi from Spain researching fire ecology at UC Davis. The three compared and contrasted responses to wildfires spanning the animal, human, and environmental sectors within a global context moderated by our very own UC Davis medical student, Rawly Lyle. [The symposium was a student led event! Students ran the planning meetings, set up Advising sessions for case competitors, helped with all communications, came up with the topics to be discussed in the symposium, wrote the case for the competition, and reached out to select keynote speakers and panelists. The UC Davis faculty did help them think through logistica, helped create official websites, and pointed them in the right direction. ]
