One health initiative on Animal Human Conflict and its impact on transmission of diseases of public health importance, environme

Saturday 04 November 2023

Millennium India Education Foundation (MIEF), a 2003 registered NGO, has been working on the One Health since the year 2008 in the country.
Under this program, the main objective of the organisation has been to create a common platform for medicos, veterinarians and agriculture-environment scientists and practitioners, where the discussions in the form of presentations/lectures revolve around diseases of public health importance arising from animals and vice versa.

Our partners from medical sector include AIIMS New Delhi, Vardhman Mahavir Medical College & Safdarjung Hospital New Delhi, Seth G S Medical College & KEM Hospital Mumbai, Dr R N Cooper Hospital Mumbai, B J Medical College and Civil Hospital Ahmedabad Indian Medical Association. From the Veterinary sector, ICAR, IVRI, DDUVAS Mathura, GLA University Mathura, Punjab Animal Husbandry & Dairy Dev. Dept, GADVAS University Ludhiana, among others, have been partnering in our mission to sensitize both medical and veterinary practitioners on the early diagnosis and prevention of Zoonotic diseases.

Since it has been observed that by expansion of human dwelling into animal habitats, many conflicts have arisen between humans and animals, particularly on the survival of animals particularly wild life, avians and ocean life, biodiversity preservation and transmission of diseases from animals to human and vice versa. A glaring example is the Covid-19 pandemic. Besides “Human-animal conflict (particularly wildlife), in combination with other threats, has driven the significant decline of species that were once abundant and species that are naturally less abundant, have been pushed to the brink of extinction,”

Sighting of animal carcasses (some even in decomposed state) is common occurrence in rural areas in India and in urban areas disposal of slaughtered animal offal’s in drains/open places etc is also a common practice. There is little data available on the occurrence of diseases to human from these.

The One Health Day Online national conference on Saturday 4th November 2023 will discuss the risks associated from these conflicts about disease transmission, biodiversity preservation, prevention of extinction of species etc.

The participants will include veterinary and medical practitioners / researchers / experts, environment and wild life experts etc. We expect at least 100-150 delegates to participate. The speakers will be drawn from medical, animal, and environment and wild life institutions. Deliberations and resolutions adopted will be shared with all state government, central government departments / institutions who are directly associated with these issues and participants.
