Founded in 1964 by Dr. James Steele, the American Veterinary One Health Society (AVOHS) was formerly known as the American Veterinary Epidemiological Society (AVES, 1964-2023). The name was changed to AVOHS in 2023. Each year since 1964 at its annual meeting the AVES/AVOHS has presented a One Health Gold Headed Cane Award to one or two professionals who have had outstanding careers in veterinary medicine and One Health. In 2024 it held its annual meeting in Austin, Texas as a side event to the American Veterinary Medical Association Convention and awarded the 2024 One Health Gold Headed Cane Award to Drs. Ade Ojeniyi and Dr. Paul Gibbs.
